Win an Amazon Gift Card!

In an effort to get some reviews for my FREE book on Amazon.com, I am doing a contest that will go off on April 1st for a $25.00 Amazon gift card!

All you have to do is download the FREE book on amazon.com, WOTHLONDIA RISING, leave a review by the deadline of April 1, come back here and comment that you have left a review, along with the link for it. If the link is good and the review is legitimate, you are in! The wonderful news is that there have already been a great deal of downloads since the book went free in late January, so some of you may have already read it.

I will be using randomizing software from http://www.random.org/integers/ to generate the winner and pasting the screenshot on my blog along with the person's name. Anyone that has an AMAZON.COM account is eligible.

I would also like the reviews posted to Goodreads and Smashwords, too, which requires a cut and paste, though this is not required for the contest.

It's that simple, folks! All it requires is the time to read and review the book within the next month or so. And remember to come back and post a comment along with the link to the review on Amazon.com to get your name entered in the contest.

Comment #1 will be #1 with regards to the contest winner. Oh, and as a side note, if you decide to review more of my work within the time frame, post that too and double your chances of winning.

Good luck all and happy reading!

See you in Wothlondia...

Kindle or Nook? Something Else?

Just a curious question I had the other day, talking to some friends. As an indie writer and self-publisher, I am curious if it is worth diving into the world of Nook. Would doing the Smashwords thing expose my book to more e-readers and readers alike? I initially released one of my books on the Nook and it met with limited results.

The big question: Is it worth leaving the Kindle KDP Select? I’ve heard mixed reviews…

First of all, do you have a kindle or Nook? I am assuming if you read, you have an e-reader. I personally have a kindle—just the reader, not the fire—and I do like it. And I know there are other devices out there: Kobo, iPad, tablets, etc. As a matter of fact, some might say that a tablet is even better than the kindle/Nook as they can just download the app. ID that is the case, are you doing the kindle or Nook app?

Anyway, I was toying with the idea of making my work available again for the Nook, but am wondering how many readers actually ignored the 800 pound gorilla that is the kindle to get the Nook instead? Many? Based on some numbers I had seen and forecasting, the Nook and B&N might be in some trouble. Then in other recent news, I heard that the Nook might be bought by Microsoft, so who knows? Again, that is all speculation. Another interesting tidbit is that Amazon, as of an article in March, is going to buy Goodreads. How will that affect book sales?

I am asking you, the reader, what do you use if you have the choice: Kindle or Nook?

Oh, and as a shameless self-promotion on my birthday, all books were reduced yesterday to $2.99 and under for the week. So if you wanna do me a solid, feel free to pop on over and check out my Realm of Ashenclaw, pick up an inexpensive book and enjoy some heroic, old school fantasy! Or don't...either way, we are cool! :)

Ross M. Kitson Interview

I had the opportunity recently to interview fellow 'Skullduster' Ross Kitson, Author of the Darkness Rising series. He believes (and I agree) that we have very similar writing styles and influences along the way that made it so.

I admire Ross as a writer and as a human being. He is a doctor in the UK with a family and still somehow finds time to gift us with some amazing fantasy. Do yourself a favor and check some of that out here:

The Interview:

Explain your main characters briefly~
The main character in the Prism series is Emelia. We first meet her as a teenager, serving as a housemaid in a noble house in a land called Eeria. Emelia was sold into servitude by her father, and is still coming to terms with that. She begins to have prophetic dreams and develops odd powers, which we learn are the emergence of a type of (vilified) sorcery called Wild-magic.
The series follows Emelia’s growth as a woman. The price of utilizing Wild-magic is mental illness, and Emelia struggles with bipolar disorder through the books. Her relationships with other main characters, both intimate and friendships, become a key factor in the fate of the world she lives in.
I was aware that the’ rags to riches’ story has been done to death, especially in fantasy. What I wanted to avoid was the idea that Emelia is secretly some reborn hero, or prophesized great hope that’ll save the world. She isn’t: she’s just a naïve, slightly screwed-up girl, with powers she struggles to control.  I think I drew more from the world of comics, such as X-men or Spiderman, in the creation of Emelia and Wild-magic (well, minus the Spandex pants….).

Give us a brief synopsis of your storyline~
Well, some I’ve alluded to above, but here goes. Emelia, who works as a servant, begins to develop strange powers. One of her friends at the Keep (where she serves) dies mysteriously, and Emelia suspects the Lord’s son is the culprit. Her days there are numbered after she confronts him, and she then escapes with two thieves- Jem and Hunor- one of whom is a Wild-mage. He takes Emelia under his wing and trains her.
The thieves have stolen a strange crystal, which later turns out to be part of an ancient Prism of Power. A group of knights arrive to reclaim it, and then that’s when the adventure really kicks in. You see, a group of undead sorcerers, led by a ghast called Vildor, need the Prism for their nefarious plan. So the chase is on, and will continue to be on for all six books!

What are you reading now?
I have three books on the boil. Firstly, I’m slogging through Robert Zelazney’s Amber chronicles: all ten books in one 8 font tome! Slow going, but very very good.
Second, on my kindle, I’m reading Clive Johnson’s Leiyatel’s Embrace. It’s a fantasy book with a degree of eloquence that I’ve not read in years.
Thirdly, I’m reading Elise Stoke’s Cassidy Jones and The Secret Formula with my daughter. It’s a YA superhero book and is simply fantastic.

Who is your favorite character to write?
That is really tricky. I love the slightly affected indulgence of Vildor, the bad guy in the Prism series. He has a trace of melodrama to his actions, and a confident patter that makes you want to slap his smug face. At the same time, the Fire-mage, Ygris, has such fun dialogue that he’s a close contender. His people, the Pyrians, learned their ‘common’ tongue from old Imperial literature and so speak everyday like they are eloquent actors. He certainly provides the best quotes in the book.

Do you have a writing process?
LOL, when I can!
In seriousness I tend to plot and re-plot continually and jot these all down. I create a framework of a plot, then the characters within that framework, and then I write. I find that sub-plots, scenes and dialogue sort of evolves as you do it. With the first draft, which is a sort of ‘splurge’ writing, I then go back and tweak it for consistency, style etc. Next stage is running it past my friends who beta-read, and then I generally take their suggestions on board. Final stage is then to get it out to the editor.

What advice would you give to an aspiring author?
Self-belief is vital. Be happy with what you do, do it because it is fun, and don’t continually seek reassurance from others. Don’t be afraid to say ‘screw it’ to traditional publishing and do-it yourself, but be aware of the work involved and ask others for advice, via social networks. Refine your book again and again, but be aware there comes a point when you just have to put it out and sit back…

What inspired you to pursue writing?
I just love it. I’ve always enjoyed creating, and I was a big-RPGer when I was younger. Then my creativity focused into convoluted campaigns and mashing up pre-written modules to fit my vision and ideas. It all got put on hold as I trained as a doctor, but then about five years ago I started writing a story based on old DnD characters. A friend said I should try something new, and so off I went!!!

What sets your books apart from others of the genre?
What I think I’ve done is to take a traditional epic/heroic fantasy storyline (small bunch of heroes against vast evil power; hero in menial role becomes saviour) and then throw in loads of other influences to make it feel fresh. So I’ve tossed in some real DnD/RPG vibes, superhero style Wild-magic, comedy, modern dialogue style (rather than pseudo-medieval), some curious races, a villain who is quite intricate and tortured, and themes such as mental illness and self-discovery. I hope the world, with its long history, comes across as detailed and well-structured.

You are obviously a huge D&D guy, which I can tell from your other blog posts and whatnot. What inspired this current storyline?
I think the nature of the storyline is very D&D in principle: we have a quest, with a bunch of cool characters. We have a magic system and magical artifacts. We have a bunch of bad guys and demons, a mythology, weird races and detailed battles. The D&D influences are glaring in my work, and I’m proud of that. After all, D&D was written as a modification of table-top wargaming into role-playing, with many classic fantasy influences such as Tolkien, Lieber, Anderson, Howard, Moorcock et al. That’s a heck of a pedigree.
Also playing and DMing D&D taught me about structure, rules, plot and characters and how all of these need to hand together in a rational way. Your magic has to be consistent in your world, it has to have rules and rationale.
And finally it taught me that, ultimately, it all has to be fun or no-one will be interested in it.

If your books were made into a movie, who would play the roles of your characters?
I love this question! My current fave cast list would be:
Emelia: Emelia Clarke (who plays Daenyrs Tarragon in Game of Thrones)
Hunor: James McEvoy
Jem: David Thewlis (Prof Lupin in the HP films)
Lady Orla: Anna Torv (from Fringe)
Vildor: Tom Hiddleston (Loki in Thor/Avengers)

When did you start writing?
Over the last five years I’ve really started up with the writing. In that time I’ve written five of the six Prism books (two are published, one being edited, two are in draft and need a little more tweaking), a YA sci-fi/steampunk, and several short stories.
At the moment I’m awaiting the final edit on my YA book, The Infinity Bridge. It is set in York and tells the story of two brothers who can see rifts between dimensions, one of whom gets labeled as schizophrenic. It’s a fairly action-packed story with touches of steampunk in it. It’s being released in October. I have two anthology stories written: one is in the Skulldust Circle collection, and that is about Jem and Hunor in their early days as thieves; the other is a steampunk short story called the Boat of Ra, which is a collection by a new imprint, Kristal Ink. I’m putting the final touches on Darkness Rising Book Three – Secrets, which I hope will be out in e-book around New Year.

Why do you write?
I find the escapism from the pressures of my working life is perfect. I work as a consultant in intensive care medicine and anaesthesia, which is fairly full-on and can be emotionally draining. So writing speculative fiction is a great release. I’ve also found that writing stuff is inspiring for my kids, especially my daughter, who now writes her own short stories all the time!

Who is your favorite author?
Ahh, that’s such a tough question. Can I cheat and have a few? Philip Pullman’s series, His Dark Materials, remains an all time favorite and I love his style. Contemporary literature I’ve always loved Roddy Doyle’s books. Comics has to Alan Moore, and Neil Gaiman, who made the cross-over from comics like Sandman to novels. In fantasy I really enjoy George RR Martin and Steven Erikson, although they can be rather bleak.

Thanks for the interview, Gary. I’ve really enjoyed answering the questions!

Here is another sample of Secrets of the Ebonite Mines to whet your fantasy appetite:

“How long has it been since we left that sickening temple?” asked Rose Thorne who sat lazily at the small table in the center of the wagon. She held the magnificent dagger Zaedra—one of a pair with Avorna—in her left hand, admiring its expertly-made hilt and blade. She absently twirled her long, red hair sporadically with her right hand as she looked out the porthole, waiting for an answer.

Saeunn sat in a chair to her right while Orngoth lay down on the floor where the group had spread out several bedrolls in an attempt to make it more comfortable for the giant half-ogre. The three apprentices were present, including the badly injured but recovering Rolf, who was not in the best of shape, but whose condition was stabilized at least.

Elec Stormwhisper and Garius Forge moved about the caravan, pacing back and forth. Garius was brooding and Elec seemed to be suffering from an intense nervousness of some kind.

Rose regarded Garius just then, inspecting silently the powerful Inquisitor from the Order of the Faceless Knights, a very esteemed and feared organization. Garius continued walking the floor with ease in his heavy plated armor, seeming not to tire. He wore it as effortlessly as a sage might wear a robe, Rose noted. She found herself, strangely enough, wondering what his body might look like beneath it, lean and full of muscles, she guessed.

“Two days now,” Garius suddenly answered her question. His words startled her and she happily disengaged from her embarrassing line of thinking.

“We near the northernmost section of the Oakcrest Mountains,” stated the Inquisitor as he paused to stare out the porthole opposite Rose, “as you may be able to tell from the sudden rumbling of the wagon rolling over the uneven road below. We shall be reaching that point within the next half day, and then will be heading back due south around the mountain. Once we hit Heartwood Valley, beyond the Oakcrest Mountains, we will stop for several hours where you will be able to stretch your legs. The road should become less treacherous, too.”

Rose peered outside and watched as the sun disappeared behind a cloud, pondering the recent events that had brought them here. They had been traveling for two days straight and planned to go another before stopping so that they could eat something other than dried bread or stale fruit. The construct that drove Nimaira’s magical caravan continued onward, seemingly paying no heed to those within.

Garius turned from the porthole and regarded the half-ogre, who occupied a huge portion of the caravan’s floor in front of the alcove where their beds were kept. His battered leg was elevated and resting on a chair. They’d all taken note that Orngoth’s leg was mending at a much faster rate than they’d anticipated but it seemed that the bone was fusing in an uneven fashion. They had not gotten the chance to set it properly after the escape from the temple and now it appeared it was too late, which Garius explained that he did not fully understand. Rose’s ankle and Saeunn’s elbow, however, were completely healed now thanks to a combination of both Garius’ healing abilities and Elec’s alchemical ointments.

They trudged along for another day. Elec conversed with Saeunn, in between his lengthy disappearances into his extra-dimensional lab space. When the barbarian did speak to the inquisitive elf, he intently consumed the information with an attentive gaze. But Rose spent all of that time in deep consideration as to why she kept thinking of Garius. And in ways she’d never thought possible after their initial encounter in the conference room of the High Council.

TEARS OF BLOOD FREE! Happy Birthday to ME?

Since my birthday is coming up, I have decided to give you a free short story again! What? Shouldn't I be receiving the gift, you say? Well, I kind of look at like this: I give you something for free, and you, in return, read my work and perhaps even post a review. Or, even better, you like it and come back to buy a few more in the series and begin your journey into the magnificent Realm of Ashenclaw. Whaddaya say?

This is all leading up to my WIP, Secrets of the Ebonite Mines, dropping some time the end of the month, too, if all goes according to plan. I have the masterful William Kenney working on a cover that will knock your socks off and the incomparable Stephanie Dagg trying to make me once more sound as though I know what I am talking about!

In all seriousness, nothing would make me happier than if you all simply read my work. I would love a review if you happen to read it on Amazon and Goodreads. That would certainly make me happy!

That is why I put pen to paper so to speak--a gift to you.

And just for a teaser, I will post another sample here, along with the cover again!

It will be available to download for the Amazon Kindle from Wednesday (6/6) all the way through until Sunday (6/10)! Enjoy!

“They seem to be… random in their movements. Like they are not organized. They have no leader, I think.”

Suddenly, a scout on horseback appeared in the distance. As he neared, he clumsily dismounted, stumbling to the ground. Scarr recognized the boy as one of Helzak’s children—Halton. Helzak was a fine bowman in Chansuk, and had the eyes of an eagle. Normally Helzak would be either hunting with Scarr or helping as a scout, but this day had him bedridden with sickness. That was why the boy was in his place. The young man approached with a frightened and disturbed look upon his pale, young face. His eyes were wide and he was pointing to the north as he attempted to gather himself.

“Halton, what is it?” asked Scarr as he tried to steady the boy.

“The… Greymoors,” managed the boy, gasping for air, the heat from his breath seen clearly against the cold of the morning air. “A horde…,” he continued, finally slowing his breathing. “A horde of… something… is coming this way!”

Scarr grabbed the boy by his comparably smaller arms and pulled him closer. “A horde heading where?!” demanded the barbarian chieftain.

“They are heading northwest. Most of them, anyway,” cried the young man. Scarr could feel the boy shaking and fidgeting in his grip, truly frightened by whatever it was that he had witnessed.

“How far are they now, boy?” asked Scarr, plans formulating in his mind.

“Many miles still,” Halton answered, motionless in the iron grip of Scarr’s powerful hands. “I was able to spot them a great distance away, but—“

“But, what?” insisted Scarr, pulling the boy even closer. They were almost nose to nose.

Scarr pushed Halton back and released his vise-like grip, admiring the boy’s obvious talent for perception and observance of details. Just like Helzak, thought Scarr. The boy fell backward, but caught his balance and stood again, staring at the commanding barbarian before him who tugged at his braided beard thoughtfully.

“Alert the village,” Scarr ordered, specifically directing this command to Magreth. He nodded and ran off in a dead sprint. Then he turned to Rothnarr and added, “You’d better alert your people, too, if your father doesn’t know already.”

“Aye,” Rothnarr agreed and strode away with purpose.

Within moments, a crowd began to form around their leader, a wall of muscled barbarians who stood intently awaiting the words of their great chieftain.

“Barbarians of Chansuk,” Scarr began, but then hesitated, seeing his daughter amongst the group, her hair now braided and tied back in a pony tail. “We are facing an enemy unknown to us. But, whoever they are, we will send them running back in the direction from whence they came!”

A chorus of cheers went up with that declaration, a deafening roar from the hundreds of barbarians gathered. That roar slowly turned into a chant of “Chan-suk, Chan-suk!”

    What is Pinterest?

    Seriously... What is Pinterest?

My wife is crazily addicted to the site. She enjoys looking at kittens, funny pics, recipes, dresses, clothes, shoes, etc. and I have found her on there for several hours at a time. She is obviously not the only one! I have spoken to some people at work (mostly the ladies, mind you) who enjoy going on Pinterest for the same thing. Just browsing the pictures for anything that strikes their fancy.

I have to hand it to the creators...the idea is pure genius.

I want to know what we can do as authors to connect with other authors/artists/creative people to help promote each other there or share links to your own sites, etc. I have just started posting pics of book covers of mine and a few other authors and want to know if anyone wants to start doing this sort of thing with me.

If interested, please leave me a comment with a link to your Pinterest page and your amazon page and we will go from there.

My Amazon author page is HERE and my PINTEREST page is HERE. If you post up here with a comment, I will do my best to Pin your site ASAP! Happy sharing!

I hope you enjoyed the sample! See you in Wothlondia! Cheers!

Sample of A Rose in Bloom

It is Sample Sunday again on twitter and I am offering a sample of Wothlondia Rising 2: A Rose in Bloom, which will be due out on Kindle Select next weekend for 99 cents! I hope you all enjoy it. This story is about the tough childhood of one Rose Thorne and is more Young Adult themed as she is a teenager throughout the entire story. I hope you all enjoy the sample!

A young Rose Thorne by William Kenney
As Rose made her way to the brothel, she avoided the orphanage, still not being able to face up to what it had done to her over the relatively few years she’d spent upon the face of Wothlondia. She had not yet reached her sixteenth name-day, but she had many recollections from her early teens. These memories did not elicit pleasant thoughts, nor did they bring into being a joyful childhood… far from it, Rose thought bitterly.

She had been faced with a constant stream of cruelty from potential guardians. Her maidenhead had been taken from her at a young age, before her thirteenth name-day if she recalled correctly, and as well she had been physically and verbally assaulted and otherwise abused. Many a step-parent, step-sibling or other keeper had mistreated her, or worse, when she’d been in their care, including the proprietor of the orphanage to whom she owed a special kind of payback!

Augustus by name, he was a well-connected man. He had frequently sent her off to someone who was unfit to mother or father her properly. More than a few times, when accosted by people who should have been protecting her, Rose had had to take matters into her own hands, especially when help from the Watch or city officials did not arrive in a timely manner. Afterwards, they always simply sent her back to the orphanage, too young to face any real charges, and never did they find any evidence of the ill-treatment she claimed—and this despite her obvious bruises. She had hated her time there and was preparing to run away from the orphanage once more when the half-elven and beautiful Marielle had stepped in, eliciting the young woman from Augustus, citing her looks and offering a favorable return on investment if Rose remained unscathed.

Marielle had taken her away from Augustus that summer and Rose began her life at the bordello. It was much improved when compared to the orphanage and her figure began to fill out into shapely proportions. Marielle, her Madam, assigned her a position after her fourteenth name-day as an errand girl at first. She would allot chores to Rose, having her handle everyday jobs, mostly involving washing and cleaning for the first half year of her stay as she acclimatized to their ways and procedures. Rose was both athletically built and pleasing to the eye for men who enjoyed the company of a female counterpart. This was a blessing in disguise to Marielle, as Rose was becoming extremely beautiful—more so than many of the other girls—and lending herself well to her approaching profession. Of course, those others couldn’t help but notice and often shunned her or otherwise mistreated her verbally.

Rose had an uncanny sleight of hand, as well as a silver tongue, both of which were a benediction and a curse. She could talk her way into and then out of trouble, though wise cracks were bountiful and often spoken at inopportune times. She was frequently scolded by her Madam for this particular habit, though Marielle had already guessed that the lectures would not arrest Rose’s loose lips.

Rose was also discovering a certain penchant and aptitude for thievery. The thrill of pilfering goods or coin made her heart race, and she could not stop herself. Theft was fast becoming her drug of choice. She showed a dual acuity of both mind and body that allowed her to accomplish the deeds without being detected a single time—at least by the Watch. She was particularly well accomplished at the art now, and that had attracted some unwanted attention from a certain group of organized crime persons in Oakhaven.

She’d been warned more than once about purloining goods—including the food she stole—and that if she continued, there would be consequences. But being the brash young soul Rose was, she did not take it seriously, nor did she believe that they would catch her. So, she continued to steal, food mostly, whenever she desired. She did not have much in the way of coin and certainly could not afford the prices of the merchants here in Oakhaven, who sold their goods at inflated cost. But that wasn’t the issue. Rose filched because she could and because she was good at it. And it didn’t hurt to have a full belly when going to the brothel in the morning, as Marielle soon had her toiling, putting her to task to complete many chores.

What Do Readers Expect for a Buck?

I was going over my blueprint again for my future publishing plans with regards to what the Amazon Kindle and B&N Nook are doing to the book market. I thought about what a short story should cost and realized that 99 cents is really not all that much to pay for a short story. And I know--you can purchase entire novels for 99 cents, right? Allow me to explain my point.

eBooks have taken over for print in many ways and sort of fits with the whole economy at this point In that many people do not have the expendable income they once had. That being said, books that sold for $7.00 to $25.00 are now selling for…99 cents to $2.99? What does this mean for the artist who churns out the work…or the editors and artists who supported these authors for a living? What about the people who complain about books not being available in print form, but are not spending the money to BUY them in print form and instead, are downloading eBooks? I am not saying any of this is wrong, merely examining opinions and putting them on the table for all to see: consumer and seller. There is a difference in cost to the author for print vs. eBooks.

I know what my costs are for putting out a book and they are not cheap. If you are lucky enough or talented enough to do everything yourself, than you may have a leg up on the rest of us! I know that if I plan to charge someone for my work, then I had better be proud of it! I remembered seeing a post form literary marvel Derek Haines on the Vandal and dug it up—it was an excellent read and really bears in mind my whole point here, too. (Derek’s Post)

Anyway, if you are going to charge money for a product, it needs to be—in my opinion—as professional as you can make it. Right? So, I need to find a cover artist and an editor, minimally. That right there is not cheap and in this 'Amazonian' marketplace, where there is soooo much to sift through, how much will I make back at 35 cents a copy? I go into it figuring at some point, maybe my work will be noticed and appreciated by many, but I still feel that whatever fans I have and those who pay for my work will get the very best that I can give them. If you put the garbage in, you get the garbage out, right? I am in it for the long haul and do not plan on running for the hills anytime soon. I will be publishing books, no matter my profit, for as long as I am able. But, with those I have spoken with about the topic, the frustration level is high.

The point of the whole discussion and what I am asking my followers and peers:

How much do you expect for 99 cents?

Another Excerpt from Covenant of the Faceless Knights...

Another excerpt from Covenant of the Faceless Knights for my tweeps and Fans on Facebook for #SampleSunday! Enjoy, my friends and have an excellent weekend!

Garius Forge of the Order of the Faceless Knights as depicted by William J. Kenney

Blow after blow rang out—hammer hitting staff and vice-versa. Sparks flew from the impact, with neither of the two combatants gaining any ground. For several rounds of blows, they exchanged forceful strikes with their respective weapons, neither of them scoring a hit on anything but the other’s weapon. They finally backed away from one another, simultaneously realizing their futility.
The shaman charged Garius again, trying to find an opening in his defenses, but he was denied repeatedly by The Repentant. Garius realized that the brief gift offered from the war-god was fading. He needed to formulate a new strategy.
He allowed the shaman to get close, allowing him another wide swing. But, this time he offered what looked to be a blocking motion and instead, sidestepped it. He reversed his grip on the hammer and slammed its handle into his enemy’s exposed gut.
Garius realized immediately the folly of his strike. It was like hitting solid stone. A backhand from the powerfully altered orc sent him reeling and he barely managed to hold onto his weapon. His armor withstood the blow, but the sheer force of the strike sent him stumbling away.
A repetition of inhumanly strong blows rained down upon him now. Garius finally released the grip on his hammer, again changing tactics in an attempt to defeat this creature. He recoiled under the mighty assault of the mutated orc, who seemed even more animalistic, its bone-like staff continually crashing down upon him, over and over. His blood-red armor was beginning to conform to the power of this creature’s blows.
Once more, he found himself faced with an opportunity with which he needed to employ the necromantic power of The Reaper. He uttered a prayer to the god of death, asking him once again for access to the deadly degenerative plane. As the gift was granted, he channeled that energy into a discharge of force that sent the shaman hurling away, landing with a thud several paces from him. Garius felt the energy leech a bit of the orc’s soul into him. He also knew he could not reach his weapon and decided instead to use this brief respite to launch another necromantic assault.
Standing once more, he began an invocation, directing the dark energies toward the shaman, who was still getting to his feet. The power welled up inside him, holding it until he could no longer contain it. With that, a loud crackling sound, accompanied by a strange dark-purplish radiance, burst forth from him. It completely consumed the shaman, eating away at his flesh and soul as the shaman’s spirits fought hopelessly to aid him.

    Paper or Plastic?

When purchasing a book, magazine or newspaper, is it that much easier to simply view it on your phone, tablet, laptop or computer? Do you miss the feel of the paper in your hands? I do...and I can see why the market is rapidly changing. The advent of the tablet/reading device is altering the reading/writing game forever.

The reason that I ask is that while I personally do enjoy the feel of a real book in my hands, I cannot deny the ease at which books can simply be downloaded to your device for your perusal. Simply put: the market has changed forever. This fact leads me to the decision and I see no alternative but to jump on the ‘eBook only’ bandwagon. Several authors that I have spoken to recently are doing this, too. And with Amazon signing authors directly, they are cutting out the publishing house and agents and bringing the content straight to the reader. While this is strange and hard to understand at first, it is something that is appealing to me as a starving self-published author. If printing cost is all-but eliminated and readers, gamers and other enthusiasts of the written word can simply download their content to their portable device, how can I choose otherwise? Kindle, Nook, iPad and smart phones have simply changed the game...a lot!

I am actively writing and working on several new books, including a prequel/anthology to Covenant of the Faceless Knights that will include the Pre-Prologue of the novel as well as short stories that include all of the main protagonists (Saeunn, Elec, Garius, Rose and Orngoth).

I am also working on the sequel to CotFK, as well as a Role-Playing Game (RPG) supplement based on the Realm of Ashenclaw. (I will let you speculate as to which gaming system.) While I would love to pursue putting these things in print, the cost to profit ratio is simply not appealing to me. I am actively researching writing and self-publishing options and want to know what experiences any other writers/readers/authors/artists may want to share!

In closing, how do you want your products delivered to you? Are you willing to pay more for an actual book or are you content with the (probably) lower price/speed of delivery involved with an eBook?

As always, I look forward to reading your comments!

    The Future of Publishing?

Which Indie Publisher would you suggest?

I am asking all authors and writers who you might be using to publish your blood, sweat and tears that go into your writing and what you get for your hard earned money from that publisher. I know of several that I have been researching: Authorhouse (who published my debut novel), Outskirts Press, Smashwords, Create Space and The Domino Project to name a few that I have looked at recently.

As I move forward with my plan for world domination *pauses for giggles*, I am seriously considering doing only an eBook. I feel that the profit margin is somewhat under my control as well as the distinct pricing (no print cost) and this despite really enjoying the feel of an actual book in my hands. I am learning that going to print with a self-published title seems suicidal. It may not be that way forever or even for some of you established authors—I’d like to hear from you to discuss this! Is this where the market is trending?

On a personal note, I was told by my publisher that there would be a nook and an iBookstore version available in the package I purchased and to this point, they are still not available. I went live end of July, 2011.

The recent moves of Amazon and eBook distributors, who appear to be cutting out the middle man (the big publishing houses), are making the product directly available to the consumer as a download. A friend and fellow author, Theodore Cohen, forwarded me this article about AMAZON.

    What do you think, authors?

Is it only a matter of years before all brick and mortar stores disappear and become a thing of the past?

Will our grandchildren and great grandchildren only read books on their smartphones, tablets, PC’s, laptops and such?
