Misha Gerrick Interview

First off, tell us a little bit about you....
Thanks for having me over!
I’m a South African born and raised, and I live on a farm in the beautiful Western Cape with my family and a small menagerie of pets. I love writing most of all, but when I’m not doing that, I’m usually doing some craft or the other while watching TV, or reading.

Tell us about your books/What genre do you consider your books?
I’m an eclectic writer, so my works in progress run the gamut from romance to time travel to epic fantasy… My currently published works are all fantasy of some sort. The War of Six Crowns is a YA Epic Fantasy/Portal Fantasy series, of which the first two book is published.
Then I have the first book in an Urban Fantasy trilogy out as well, called Endless.

When did you start writing?
Depends on how you define “writing.”
I was reciting stories and poetry to my grandmother before I went to school and dabbling with writing off and on throughout primary school.
But overall, I see myself as a writer starting the year 2001, because that’s the year I decided to be serious about writing and finishing my first novel. (It’s a romance novel. And I’m still working on it because it’s cursed, I tell you.) Sadly, I can’t be more specific than that, because I never marked the day I started, and sadly the first drafts of the book are all lost. Cursed.

Why do you write?
Writing and the arts are in my blood, so my life just feels incomplete if I don’t do it.

What would be your choice for a superpower?
I think I would like that time travel gift like in the movie About Time. I would probably use it to create more time for myself to read and write.

Who is your favorite author?
I don’t have one. I’ve honestly read so many good books in my life that it’s hard for me to pick out even a top 100.

What are you reading now?
Jane Eyre. It’s one of my bucket list books, and so far, I’m liking it a lot.

Who is your favorite character to write?
All of them. In a lot of ways, they’re alive to me, and often, even the ones I don’t like at all (looking at you, James) are still amazing to write because those are the ones that seem to come alive most, with my most vivid writing.

Do you have a writing process?
Yes. I rough draft by hand without planning anything. Then I take what I like from the draft and build a plan around it. After that, I rewrite to my computer, correcting the flaws and weaknesses I’d discovered during the rewrite. After that, I go through a slew of edits and revisions.

What advice would you give to an aspiring author?
Try all the writing techniques at least once, but figure out what works for you. And don’t let anyone tell you that you’re doing it wrong. (The right way to write is the way you use to actually finish what you started.)
Bonus tip: Back. Up. Your. Work. Right now. NOW. Why are you still reading this? Go. Shoo.

What inspired you to pursue writing?
Nothing. It’s always been something I did because I enjoyed it. Although I suppose I wanted to try it back when I was five because my gran is a writer/poet and I was still in that “me too” phase. You know the one. “I want to do that too, Gran.” And she, in her infinite wisdom/cruelty, enabled me in this folly.

What are your favorite TV shows/Movies to watch in between writing?
I like basically anything and everything except for horror and erotica-type stuff, so I’m usually going through my Netflix, looking for something that strikes my fancy and suits my mood.

What are your current projects?
Depends on how you look at it. Current as in works in progress would be about ten open drafts.
Things I’m actively prioritizing at the moment: Book 3 in The War of Six Crowns, which I’m currently revising, and that cursed romance novel I mentioned, which I’m rewriting. A-freaking-gain.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to readers?
If you do pick up my books, I just hope you enjoy them. And if you do, that you’ll get in touch to let me know.

Quick Fire:
Cats or dogs? Both. Also…horses.
Coffee or tea? Depends on the coffee…or tea.
Favorite food? Fillet steak with a cream-based mushroom sauce.
Vanilla or chocolate ice-cream? Vanilla
What are 3 things you never leave home without? Notebook, cell phone, something to read/do (e.g. crocheting/needlepoint projects.)
Laptop or desktop? Laptop
Who are 3 famous people you would to hang out with? Oscar Wilde, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens (and if one of them couldn’t make it, Mark Twain.)
TV or Movies? Both.

Fanni S Interview

First off, tell us a little bit about you
My name is Fanni (with an “i” not with a “y,” strange, I know, but that’s how it is.) I’m in my late twenties and I live in France, near Paris. I’m Hungarian but nowadays I mostly write in English. My hobbies are travelling, reading, writing and learning languages. I love board games, series and cute crazy stuff. I teach English from kindergarten to middle school.

Tell us about your books/What genre do you consider your books?
I like stories where reality and imagination intermingle, that’s why my favourite genres are urban fantasy, magical realism and cyberpunk. Even when I write realist fiction, I try to make the story “magical” either with the atmosphere or with the story telling.

I have (too) many WIPs both in Hungarian and in English, but I think I’ll concentrate on the English ones. I hope one day I’ll be able to finish most of them.

The ones I’m most intrigued by are “Glasgow, my love,” which is a multiple-ended love story, exploring various possible endings of a coffee house meeting and “Dreamless” which is an alternative history / Victorian novel where imagination is banned and dreamers are hunted down. You can get to know more about my novels by checking out their Pinterest boards. (https://uk.pinterest.com/mspumpkinhime/

When did you start writing?
Oh, I started writing way back. My first projects were Sailor Moon fanzines and Knight Rider fan fiction in primary school. Then as adolescence hit I wrote love-hate poems about my crushes. Around the end of high school I started writing stuff which was not completely embarrassing. I started writing in English in 2013 while I was spending my Erasmus semester in London.

Why do you write?
I love making up worlds and I’m also awfully curious about the life of others. When I was in middle school I thought I wanted to be an artist, but I wasn’t skilled enough to draw the things I saw in my head and I wasn’t patient enough to try to learn it. In the end, I found out that I can also draw pictures with words and I’m much better at that.

What would be your choice for a superpower?
I’d like to be able to stop time, so that I can get a few more hours to write when the writing bug bites me. My biggest problem is that I’m very enthusiastic and I fall head over heels for story ideas and I work like a madwoman in the beginning. Then something interrupts my process or I have a lot of other things to do so I get out of the mood. Sadly, I’m a bit like Dory from Finding Nemo: Look, a new idea!
I think stopping time could definitely help with this issue.

Who is your favorite author?
Neil Gaiman is my absolute favourite, he is also my role model. I also like Antal Szerb, a Hungarian writer from early 20th century. He has pretty good English translations, I warmly recommend him because he shaped me a lot as a writer.

What are you reading now?
I’m reading J. M. Sullivan’s debut novel, Wanderland Chronicles and The Hollow City from Ransom Riggs. I also started re-reading an Antal Szerb novel because I found a good French translation. I want the summer holidays to start already so I have more time to read.

Who is your favorite character to write?
I like characters who are easy-going and make me laugh, they’re very fun to write. Sometimes I create characters because I’m inspired my one of my celeb crushes and I want to spend some time with them at least on paper :D

Do you have a writing process?
Not really. Ideally I just sit down and write but for that I need peace and like 0 distractions. Approaching deadlines do miracles to me and I can write 2000 words in 1-2 hours. I like these marathons because although the stories aren’t perfect, at least I got them done. Usually I return to them a few weeks / months later and make them into something good. If it’s a longer story, I like to create Pinterest boards and Spotify playlists because this way I can bottle up the mood of the story.

What advice would you give to an aspiring author?
I know it’s a cliché but really, please read. Read the classics and the big names but read also indie authors because, besides helping fellow writers, you can discover hidden gems.

If you feel writing is your way, don’t let others discourage you. Listen to the critiques. Take what you need and try to improve your writing. Everybody has to work on their writing even the big names. Some stories will be better, some stories will be worse.

I know it’s difficult to face mean words and rejections, but if the other person is an a*hole it’s really their problem and not yours. If they’re nice and fair about your opinion, take notice and don’t give up. Maybe they weren’t just the right audience for your story.

Try to find writing buddies. Join a Nanowrimo community, sign up for Scribophile or any other writing group. Read and critique other people’s writing. The easiest and least painful way is to learn from other people’s mistakes.

What inspired you to pursue writing?
I’m a serial hobby-abandoner. I’ve done folk dancing, karate, modern dance, guitar, cross-stitch, etc., but I just fell out of love with them after a while. Writing stayed with me. I write because it makes me happy and I can get transform my troubles and pain into something (hopefully) beautiful. Of course, I also want to be rich, famous and beloved but if only my friends read me I’m fine with that too.

What are your favorite TV shows/Movies to watch in between writing?
It’s been a very good year as for series. I follow Dr. Who, American Gods and the new Twin Peaks. I also love Parks and Recreations, Black Adder and Buffy. My newest love is Gravity Falls.

What are your current projects?
It’s really high time I finish my first novel, Londemonium. It’s an urban fantasy set in Hell and London. In Londemonium Hell is a multinational company, led by its eccentric CEO, Luke Seyton. The characters include: Gregor, a German programmer who descends to Hell to retrieve his abducted crush; Molly, a feisty Irish girl in look out for her heritage; Aiko, an English-Japanese girl who wants to make sense of her life and Raphael, an immigrant angel, who desperately wants to fit in.

I’ve recently come up with a summer project for myself, we’ll see how it works out. I’m planning to write a tween novel about an adventurous summer holiday. I imagine it as a blend between Gravity Falls and Doctor Who with a lot of humour and excitement. My idea is to use the cards from a Dixit (it’s a very good association-based board game with gorgeous art) expansion which would give the writing process some randomness and excitement. I can’t wait to start.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to readers?
You can never be too nice. Be nice. I really, honestly believe in the power of politeness and kindness and I try to make the life of others easier. If more people did the same, we’d live on a much friendlier planet. I also believe that hard work and determination pays off.

I want to bring people stories that show the lives of different people because knowledge and empathy usually walk hand in hand. I also want to write stories which give hope and consolation on hard days.

Quick Fire:
Cats or dogs? Owls! Okay if I have to choose between the two I’ll go with cats, but I love dogs too.
Coffee or tea? Usually coffee, but I also like herbal tea..
Favorite food? Sushi and Japanese food in general. Also cheese sticks.
Vanilla or chocolate ice-cream? Vanilla.
What are 3 things you never leave home without? I have type 1 diabetes, so it’s essential to have my blood sugar checker, some sweet things in case of an emergency, and my phone + earbuds
Laptop or desktop? Laptop. I haven’t owned a desktop for many many years.
Who are 3 famous people you would want to hang out with? Neil Gaiman, Tom Hiddleston, Steven Moffat
TV or Movies? We don’t have a TV in our flat, although we do have Netflix. I like to go to the cinema every now and again for a change, but I prefer the cosiness of my bedroom.

Bio: Fanni Sütő is a writer in her mid-twenties. She writes in Hungarian and English; poems, flash fiction and countless unfinished novels. She tries to find the magical in the everyday and likes to spy on the secret life of cities and their inhabitants.

Jade McCulloch Interview

In what genre do you write for the most part?
I like to write science fiction, horror, and urban fantasy

Give us a brief synopsis of your book(s)
Right now I only have one book out, Zombie Bite. It’s about a young woman, named Zoey, who is trying to save a loved one from infection. I had planned to do a while series of books in that universe, but I’m not sure now. I may just write a sequel or spin off.

When did you start writing?
As soon as I could hold a pencil. I remember really enjoying the writing assignments that the teachers gave me. I think I always have enjoyed storytelling.

What inspired you to write?
I used to watch the show Ghost Writer and there was an episode where they enter a story writing contest. I saw how much fun they had writing and it kind of lead to me writing a lot as a child. I also had a lot of fun reading Goosebumps books and watching the tv show, so I think that played a part.

If your books were made into a movie, who would play the roles?
I didn’t really picture actors when I wrote my novel. I kind of just pictured the characters as their own people, and they came to life. I think if any of my books ever get made into movies I would like unknown actors and actresses playing the characters. I don’t really want the story to be outshined by star power.

What would be your choice for a superpower?
You mean I can only have one? I think I would choose time travel. If I had a bad day or something I could just press reset.

Who is your favorite author?
That’s a hard question for me because I like so many! Charlaine Harris would be one of my favorites. I really enjoyed most of the Sookie Stackhouse series and have read her Harper series too. I love Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter books. It seems like he can get me to laugh on one page and then gross me out on the next. Jeaniene Frost is also one of my favorites. She actually gave me advice when I started seriously considering a career as a writer.

What are you reading now?
I actually haven’t read anything in a while. I have trouble reading while I am writing, but the next book I plan to read will be The Bladesmith by HP Mallory. I am also searching for some good spooky reads.

Who is your favorite character to write?
I think it would have to be whoever I am currently writing. When I started writing Zombie Bite I really enjoyed writing Zoey. I loved giving her lines like, “You look like Carrie on prom night.” I didn’t like writing her as much towards the middle and end of the novel, but not because I didn’t like her, because she had gone through things that had damaged her and the damaged really started to show. Right now I am writing two new main characters, one name Anyssa and one named Kenzie. I really prefer writing Kenzie because I feel like she’s more relatable. I feel like she pushes a lot of people away and everyone can relate to a time when they have shut people out of their lives.

Do you have a writing process?
Usually I keep lots of notebooks handy for when I have an idea and end up writing whole scenes in them. I transfer it to a word document later and some stuff gets cut out while other stuff gets added. I also text message myself ideas a lot of the time.

What do you do when you aren’t writing?
I have a youtube channel where I play video games.

What advice would you give to an aspiring author?
Don’t rush your novels. Wait until they feel ready.

What sets your books apart from others of the genre?
It’s a really dark look at people who have lived among zombies.

What method do you use to publish your books for those of us who might not know how?
Right now I have my novel in kindle and nook, but I plan to have a paperback from createspace after I figure out what I want to do with it.

Wayland Smith Interview

Here is the next in the series of ongoing author interviews, and we have the pleasure of meeting Wayland Smith!

Tell us about your books/What genre do you consider your books? I write whatever the little voices tell me to, so I’m all over the map. My published novel is about a terrorist attack on Washington, DC, the ones I have drafts of or am shopping around range from urban fantasy, weird western, or mysteries.

When did you start writing? I played with a few things when I was a kid, but I started getting serious about it roughly seven years ago when a friend talked me into doing NaNoWriMo for the first time. I’ve been writing pretty steadily ever since.

Why do you write? I have stories to tell. The characters or scenes come to me, and pretty much pester me until I get them down. I hope I’m entertaining people along the way as I tell my tales.

What would be your choice for a superpower?Super-speed. You can do so many cool things with that.

Who is your favorite author? Toss up between the late Robert B Parker of Spenser fame, and Jim Butcher, author of the Dresden Files.

What are you reading now? My current book is Full Force and Effect, Mark Greaney continuing Tom Clancy’s world of Jack Ryan.

Who is your favorite character to write? Oh, that’s hard. I write about a team of superhuman mercenaries called Wildside, Inc., and Sprynt, their speedster, is usually pretty entertaining.

Do you have a writing process? Not really. I get an idea, be it a scene, or a character, or a “What if…” kind of idea, and I just go with it. I don’t outline, I just charge ahead when I start.

What advice would you give to an aspiring author? Sit down and write. I’ve been to talks by New York Times bestsellers, local writers, and all kinds of others, and that’s the point they agree on. Writers write. You will get nowhere by talking about, or thinking about writing, until you start putting fingers to keys or pen to page, however you do it. Then get someone you trust to give you actual feedback to go over it. Anyone who just says, “Oh, this is cool,” or something like that isn’t helping you.

What inspired you to pursue writing?Like I said before, my friend Harry Heckel (AKA Jack Heckel and Lee Lightner) pushed me into doing NaNoWriMo, and I’ve been going ahead since.

What are your favorite TV shows/Movies to watch in between writing?Top of the list, I’d have to say, would be Flash, Walking Dead, Gotham, Mentalist, and Longmire.
What are your current projects? Many, among them a zombie novel, vampires in the American Revolution, the superhuman mercenaries I mentioned above, and a monster hunter in modern Boston.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to readers? If you find a writer you like, buy their books, review then on Amazon and Goodreads, and talk them up. I think I end up reading more books from people I hear that are passionate about them than from any other source.

Quick Fire:
Cats or dogs?
Both. I love animals.
Coffee or tea? Neither. I’m one of the rare ones who are allergic to coffee and I can’t stand tea (I just alienated all my potential readers in the UK).
Favorite food? Chinese. I could order varieties of that all the time.
Vanilla or chocolate ice-cream? Of those two, chocolate, though I prefer mint chip.
What are 3 things you never leave home without? My badge (been in law enforcement for about 13 years), my business cards, and a mini-Mag flashlight.
Laptop or desktop? Both, sometimes at the same time.
Who are 3 famous people you would want to hang out with? Harrison Ford (who I met once and is amazingly kind to fans), Jim Butcher (same comment), and Pink.
TV or Movies? If I have to pick just one, movies as long as there’s popcorn, although I enjoy both.

Marny Copal Interview

I had the distinct pleasure of catching up with paranormal/urban fantasy author Marny Copal just the other day and she agreed to be the recipient of an interview. Marny's book, Freeblood is the first book in the Quinn Chronicles and the Kindle edition is only 99 cents through January 15! Now go pick it up!

Marny, thanks for stopping by here at Eye on Ashenclaw. When did you start writing?
I started writing when I was a little kid. My earliest tales featured our household cats as secret agents. When my seventh grade English teacher told the class to write a short story, mine turned into a novella. That assignment stands out in my mind as my first real and exciting writing experience.

Why do you write?
I write because it’s fun. I enjoy developing characters and creating scenes. I also write to develop an understanding of certain actions, feelings, issues, and concerns.

What would be your choice for a superpower? This is a tough one. So many options. The power to heal would be my choice, but I also wouldn’t mind having the ability to fly.

Who is your favorite author? I don’t have a favorite author, but I have a lot of go-to authors in fantasy, which is my favorite genre.

What are you reading now? I’m reading Wildwood, by Colin Meloy; Spider Silk, by Rod Collins; and Neuromancer, by William Gibson. I recently finished Kevin Hearne’s Hexed.

Who is your favorite character to write? I prefer writing about characters with gumption and flaws. My gutsy, smart-ass protagonist from Freeblood, Quinn Zauber, fits the bill.

Do you have a writing process? I like to develop an idea in my head before I start to write. This often happens when I’m out for a walk. Then I sit down to type what I thought up. If I come to a stop and more ideas aren't flowing easily, I get up and do chores around the house. Typically, writing problems are solved when I’m away from the computer, doing other things.

I don’t try to force anything, and I’m not an advocate of keeping the butt glued to the chair until ideas come.

I used to outline scenes late at night, but lately I've been doing a lot more actual writing during the wee hours. I’m more productive when I switch things up every now and then.

What advice would you give to an aspiring author? Be teachable. Learn your craft. Go to writing classes, and read books about writing—everything from grammar primers to symbolism studies. Also, read, read, read inside and outside your genre. Learn to cope with critiques and rejection. Those are part of the business. Perseverance is essential; don’t give up.

What inspired you to pursue writing? Many wonderful authors have encouraged me to think, feel, and experience life in different ways. They are my inspiration.

Tell us about your book. Freeblood is a fantasy thriller set in Portland, Oregon, driven by nimble banter, budding chemistry, and seat-of-the-pants action. Quinn is a lost soul, just getting by financially and emotionally. When her roommate Jo-Jo is kidnapped under strange circumstances, she sets out with her cousin Kasey to find answers in the supernatural world. The hunt takes them many places, including to the doorstep of a shrewd vampire club owner and deep into the infamous Shanghai Tunnels beneath the city. Paranormal investigator Del Whelan steps in to assist, which to Quinn, still smarting from their unresolved attraction, isn't much help at all.

Shannon Mayer Interview

I had the pleasure recently of meeting Shannon Mayer on twitter and she agreed to share some things with us here at Eye on Ashenclaw. As you may or may not know, I am in the midst of trying to spotlight some new authors (well, new to you anyway!) as to introduce my readers to as many people and good writers as I can. My blog will be performing several interviews over the next few weeks from different authors and I hope my people will enjoy it! So, please have a seat and learn a little something about Shannon as we commence with the interview.

In what genre do you write for the most part?

Urban fantasy or some sub-genre within that, I like to blend them just to make it interesting. So horror/romance, urban fantasy/mystery, are a couple of the crosses I’ve done.

When did you start writing?
It was about eight years ago that with the thought of actually trying to get something published, I sat down at the keyboard. Before that I’d been writing for years, but just for my own pleasure.

What inspired you to write?
I think it was reading great books that made me want to write my own stories. I loved to be immersed in new worlds and the idea of building my own and offering them to readers was exciting.

What would be your choice for a superpower?
Control over the elements, that would be fun.

Who is your favorite author?
Too many! Kim Harrison, Stephen King, Robert Jordan, Jacquline Carey, Brandon Sanderson to name a few.

What are you reading now?
Dragon Badge by Scott Moon, it’s an urban fantasy that blends magic and cops. Pretty funky if you ask me.

Who is your favorite character to write?
I like all my characters about the same, otherwise I wouldn’t write them at all. :0)

Do you have a writing process?
Write every day, don’t let external crap get in the way of my time on the keyboard, and always have chocolate handy for those emergency energy slumps!

What do you do when you aren't writing?
I still have a day job, so that keeps me busy and my husband and I have a large farm and animals that keeps the rest of the free time I might have tied up. And occasionally, I take a break and bake cupcakes. ;p

What advice would you give to an aspiring author?
Just keep writing and ALWAYS use an editor. You really can’t afford not to.
What sets your books apart from others of the genre? I think the blend of romance into the zombie tripe gives a bit of a different spin,  one that I hope readers enjoy!

What method do you use to publish your books for those of us who might not know how? I primarily use the KDP program with Amazon, though I do have a paperback out with Createspace now too.

Where can we find you on social media?
Twitter- @TheShannonMayer, Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/ShannonMayerAuthor and my blog, http://shannonmayer.blogspot.com are the best places to track me down.

Bio- Reading and writing from a very young age I learned early on that stories built in a fantasy world were where the fun was at. Reading books by Robert Jordan spurred me on and it was the first real epic fantasy that I fell in love with. After that came Piers Anthony, Melanie Rawn and into my older teen years, Anne Rice.

It was in Rice's novels that the idea of urban fantasy really bloomed for me and it was about that time that my grandmother was letting me read her Harlequin Historical novels. (Okay, actually she was slipping them to me when my mother wasn't looking, but let's not get picky.)

The combination of love stories and darker fantasy stuck with me and it's now not only what I gravitate towards to read on my off time (Kelly Armstrong, Laurell K Hamilton, Kim Harrison), but has become the style I love to write in.

Besides writing, I love to spend time with my family and animals, horseback ride, garden and hike with my husband.
